Mechanism of Corrosion Resistance of Weathering Steels The atmospheric corrosion of iron and steels is a function of the following factors: composition of the steel; environmental conditions; characteristics of the existing rust layers, especially porosity; cyclic wetting and drying periods; and contamination by particulates.
